Respiratory muscle training uses a specialized device to give the muscles that do the actual work of breathing something to push against. Like any other muscle, they get stronger with resistance. Breathe against that resistance consistently, and those muscles build the strength and endurance to work harder, for longer, with less effort and more efficiency.

Why Fireground Breathing Is Different

Firefighters do it every shift. A charged hoseline, a flight of stairs in full gear, an SCBA mask that makes every breath work harder than the last, all of it adds up to a demand on the lungs that few other jobs come close to. Add the weight. Full turnout gear and SCBA can add close to forty pounds. Every one of those pounds makes breathing more work, before a single flame is in sight.
